Since the beginning of 1980, nursing historian’s busy taking stock of the heritage Nightingale has left to nursing. With critical, new research questions, they investigate other people and initiatives that played a role in Nightingale’s time. For instance, the lives of the 38 women in the Crimean War are slowly retrieved from oblivion. In the Netherlands, during a period of nurses’ protests, an effigy of Nightingale was carried to her grave during a happening. Hence, she had become the personification of the nursing profession to such an extent that everything that was amiss in the profession was blamed on her. But however sharp and critical the protests were, they did not succeed in taking Nightingale down from her pedestal. Rightfully, Florence Nightingale is the founder of modern, scientific nursing, also for future generations of nurses.
